Two little girls playing a game of Diketo in an IDP (internally displaced person) camp in Abuja, ,Nigeria.

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Due to the conflict and insurgence in parts of Nigeria. Many people have lost their homes, property and have been displaced. Most now live in IDP camps in different states in Nigeria. According to the internally displaced, life in the camp is very tough and miserable. There is limited food, limited water, little to no healthcare and schools for the children.

This picture was taken during a summer school program organized for the kids at an IDP Camp in Abuja. The children were on break, and as normal kids would do, they all played different games to entertain themselves till classes resume again. This picture shows two little girls sitting on the floor playing a game of Diketo.

Diketo is a traditional coordination game. The game involves filling a small hole with tiny pebbles. As one of the stones is thrown up into the air, as many pebbles as possible are removed before catching the thrown stone on its way down. When all stones have been removed, they are put back in the same manner. (Source: J.Denbow, P.Thebe, Culture and customs of Botswana, pg176)
